2015-2017 SaWUSA Traveler Yearly Awards Announced

Starting in 2018, SaWUSA will be naming two new YEARLY AWARDS in addition to our annual Coach of the Year Award. These two awards will embody the type of STUDENTathlete and Parent we look for in putting together our teams in the future. We thought it would be fun to go back in time and name our STUDENTathlete and Guest of the Year for the past three travel seasons. So, our staff checked our files and memories and selected 6 folks. We had a lot to choose from and certainly passed over some great people. But we had to pick just one! So, congratulations to the awesome ambassadors of the USA below!

Coach of the Year

The selection is based on; helpfulness in trip preparation, post-trip survey results from parents and athletes, commitment to team safety, commitment to trip morale, athletic competition success, and a commitment to well-being of our STUDENTathletes.

2015 Rachelle Matthys, Women’s Basketball, United World Games U19, Silver Medal
2016 Bob Hutchings, Men’s Basketball, United World Games U19 East, Silver Medal
2017 Jeremy Otkin, Men’s Basketball, Euro Basketball Cup U14, Gold Medal
2018 TBD

STUDENTathlete of the Year

This traveler demonstrates athletic success in International competition. But that’s just part of the story. This traveler also appreciates the culture and diversity of the different places we visit. They display awesome patriotism and interact positively with our new International friends and make a strong positive impression about America! They demonstrate leadership throughout the trip with their teammates and coaches.

2015 Casey Cereceda, United World Games Men’s Basketball U19 East
2016 Haylee Keating, Apeldoorn, Softball
2017 Michael Walker, Barbados Men’s Basketball Stars
2018 TBD

Guest of the Year

This ‘Trip Mom’ (or Dad) makes the trip better for all travelers. They are great at ‘going with the flow’ and handling the ups and downs of International group travel. During the trip they help the SaWUSA staff care for each traveler by going above and beyond to assist other travelers, especially those traveling without parents. Most importantly, they make the trip more enjoyable just by being along for the ride.

2015 Kristi Williams, Mother of Devin Masters, United World Games Boy’s Basketball U16
2016 Jerry Stuart, Father of Emmi Stuart, United World Games Women’s Basketball U19 East
2017 Delissa McCray, Mother of Parris Rawls, United World Games Women’s Basketball U19
2018 TBD
