A huge congratulations to Janet Tyler on being named 2018 SaWUSA Coach of the Year!
Janet is from Broken Arrow, OK. She is married to Ross Tyler (also a 2x SaWUSA Coach) and they are parents to Brooke and Paige, both who have represented the USA as part of SaWUSA. Janet is President and Director of the Broken Arrow Volleyball Club (read more).
Janet led the SaWUSA’s U17 Women’s Volleyball team to a 25th place finish at the United World Games in Austria this summer. She also led SaWUSA Women’s Volleyball U15 team in 2017 to a 27th place finish in the 2017 United World Games.
In addition to her coaching duties, Janet has been instrumental in helping bring athletes from Oklahoma to Europe for two years now. She’s also been an amazing help to the structure and organization of our tours. She’s helped keep athletes safe and comfortable while traveling abroad, showing a great passion and commitment to the well-being of our STUDENTathletes.

The selection is based on; helpfulness in trip preparation, post-trip survey results from parents and athletes, commitment to team safety, commitment to trip morale, athletic competition success, and a commitment to well-being of our STUDENTathletes.

Honorable Mention
We’d like to mention a few other coaches that were up for the honor. It was a tough decision, so we were only able to pick one. But all of these coaches were very deserving. All three not only did amazing with their teams, but also had good reviews from travelers and embodied exactly what we want from our coaches…
– Bridgette “Bree” King led her U16 WBB team to the Gold Medal at the United World Games.
– Tahj Scott led the U19 West MBB team to the first Gold Medal for any SaWUSA U19 team at the United World Games.
– Kelsey Long, a third time SaWUSA Coach, led the U19 WBB team to the Bronze Medal at the United World Games.
Ineligible, But Deserving…
I’d also like to mention two other coaches I felt deserving. However, they were both ineligible for different reasons…
– Jake Otkin led his U14 MBB team to the Gold Medal at the United World Games. Additionally, he easily had the best traveler reviews regarding his coaching, leadership, and commitment to STUDENTathletes. However, he won the award last year, so he was ineligible to win it again :).
– Jody Burrows took a special role as a Players/Coach with the College Women’s Basketball team in Barbados. She did a great job helping the short-handed team gel and play really well together going 2-2 vs Barbados. However, she’s a full-time SaWUSA employee, so she’s also ineligible for this award :).
